MV Dave, Liked It So Much, I Bought the Paid Version I reached a point where I just could not stand my piano due to the middle section (where the kids bang out their music) being so out of tune. Tuner can’t get here for another week so I just needed something to get buy. I’m not a trained piano tech or tuner but I tried (in vain) to get that middle section at least close using the upper and lower registers as a point of reference but I just couldn’t figure it out well enough to get the temperament restored. Finally, desperate for at least a “survival” tuning to hold me until the pro can get here, I tried this app. After sampling the lower and upper registers, I could visually see how the octaves were stretched and could pick a point on the +/- measurement that followed the pattern. Lo and behold it worked!
At least well enough to not hurt my ears until the pro can get hear and really get it dialed in. With the paid version I can get more precise visual range and expect it will become very helpful between visits from the pro tuner. If it can do a piano this well, I imagine it would be awesome for a guitar or violin. There are a ton of apps that will work for standard tuning a guitar. I needed an app that would work for alternate tuning and I figured a piano tuner would be able to tune to any note there is to play. Naturally, you have to know the note you want to tune the string to. If you don't know what drop-D or drop-C each string needs, then you might need another app, but if you know what you want to tune each string to, this is perfect. Beezermigs, PSA: Better than Boss and Korg! I came here today because I felt like this needed to be said.
I have a $250 korg tuner and the ever so popular Boss TU-2 tuner pedal, they’re great! But when tuning my 5 string bass in the studio, I find that this app (thanks in part to my iPhone’s high quality mics) does a better more accurate job of getting me tuned quickly. The other tuners bounce around and struggle with that low signal. Using this app on my iPhone 7+, its fast and has no tracking issues with that Low B on my bass.
